Introduction & Intake

Every project begins with a conversation. This first step is about getting to know each other, understanding the context and exploring ambitions together. The intake can take place in different forms — a phone call, an online meeting or a conversation on site — depending on what feels most natural.

We discuss how the outdoor space is currently used, what questions or wishes are present, and where opportunities may lie. Sometimes ideas are already very clear, sometimes they are still evolving. This conversation helps create a shared understanding and sets a comfortable starting point for the design process.

Rather than defining solutions upfront, this step allows the project to take shape organically, in dialogue, and in line with the scope and direction that feels right for each situation.

Conceptual Framework & Design Direction

Before drawing begins, we establish a conceptual framework. This step connects insights from the intake and site analysis into a coherent design direction. It defines the underlying idea of the project: how the outdoor space should function, feel and relate to architecture, landscape and use.
Rather than focusing on details, this phase clarifies structure, hierarchy and intent. It answers questions such as: What is the role of the landscape? How does movement work through the space? Where does openness meet intimacy?
This framework guides all further decisions and ensures consistency throughout the design process. It is flexible by nature, allowing the design to evolve while staying anchored to a clear spatial vision.

Site Observation & Spatial Reading

This phase is about understanding the site in all its dimensions. Through a site visit, we take time to experience the outdoor space as it exists — observing climate conditions, sun and shade patterns, levels, orientation and how the site connects to its surroundings.

We pay close attention to aspects such as privacy, safety, views and movement through the space. How do people naturally circulate? Where are sightlines open or protected? How does the space respond to light, wind and daily use at different moments in time?

Measurements and technical information are gathered where needed, but equally important is the spatial and atmospheric reading of the site. Together, these observations form a shared understanding of place — allowing opportunities to surface organically and providing a grounded basis for the design direction that follows.

Tendering & Feasibility

Once the design has taken shape, we look at how it can be realised in a practical and realistic way. This phase focuses on feasibility, budgeting and implementation strategy, without losing sight of the original design intent.

We explore material choices, technical requirements and cost ranges, and assess how different execution scenarios compare. Where relevant, we support tendering processes and advise on suitable contractors, specialists or partners, depending on the scope and context of the project.

This step creates clarity before moving into realisation. It helps align ambition with practical considerations, offering insight into what is achievable and where adjustments may add value — always with flexibility and informed decision-making at its core.

Realisation & Guidance

During realisation, our involvement adapts to the needs and scope of the project. Depending on the agreed role, we may act as design supervisor, safeguarding quality and design intent, or take on a more active position in coordinating and guiding the execution.

Throughout this phase, we remain attentive to how the design translates into reality. Questions, adjustments and on-site decisions are addressed in dialogue with contractors, specialists and partners, ensuring that materials, detailing and spatial relationships are executed with care.

Whether our role is advisory or more hands-on, the focus remains on consistency and quality. This step ensures that the realised outdoor space reflects the original design direction and performs well over time — both in use and in experience.

In this phase, the design direction is translated into tangible proposals. Ideas are explored through drawings, layouts and spatial studies, gradually shaping the project into a clear and workable design.

Design development is an iterative process. Through ongoing dialogue, meetings — online or on site — and careful refinement, the design evolves step by step. We test proportions, relationships, materials and planting concepts, adjusting where needed until the design feels balanced, coherent and aligned with the initial direction.

This phase bridges vision and feasibility. It allows space for exploration while steadily moving towards a design that can be realised — whether as a conceptual plan or a fully developed design ready for execution.

Our approach is not a fixed formula.
Some projects require only design support, others benefit from full guidance through realisation. The scope can be simple or extensive, depending on ambition, complexity and context.
